Why Notate Notes?

It’s not about writing music.  It’s about using a different way to impress a memory into your mind, which results in higher retention of what you learn. The actual act of drawing a note on the correct line or in the correct space, opens up a powerful realization and gives you a more exact knowledge of where that note is located on the staff.  Seeing it, notating it, playing it, identifying it are more powerful together than just to see it and play it.

Music staff not printing

If you can see the lines on the pdf before printing, then you will need to open your printer or Adobe Reader preferences and locate something that says:   “print as image”.  That will allow your printer to print what is displayed on the screen as a picture instead of trying to “interpret”  it.

Piano Lessons and the Recession

Why piano lessons are the last thing you should give up if you’re worried about the economy.

In news reports about consumer confidence and spending trends during the recession, we’re hearing about how people are planning to change their spending habits this year, if they haven’t already.

If you’re feeling tempted to drop your piano lessons in an effort to save a few dollars, here are five reasons to reconsider:

1. Music represents beauty, and you need beauty even more during ugly times.

In an entry about the benefits of music, Wikipedia states: “It is often thought that music has the ability to affect our emotions, intellect, and our psychology; lyrics can assuage our loneliness or incite our passions.” (January 13, 2009). Tapping in to these effects will help you transcend and rise above the less pleasant sounds, images and issues in your day-to-day life.

2. Doing something you enjoy will help you keep a positive outlook.

An important element of the Law of Attraction, made famous by the movie The Secret, is that whatever you focus your mind on is what you will create in your life. If you quit learning piano and spend all of your time worrying about your finances, your worries will get bigger and the life you enjoy will get smaller. Your piano lessons can be something you can look forward to, feel good about and reward yourself with.

3. Depriving yourself too much could result in rebellion and even a spending “binge.”

While it would be wise to cut your spending and use your resources wisely, that doesn’t mean automatically cutting out everything you enjoy. If you try to control yourself too tightly, you may end up at a breaking point, going out and blowing your money on something you don’t really want and definitely don’t need. Keep one or two so-called luxuries in your life so that you’re not tempted to binge.

4. Developing your hobbies could lead to surprising new income streams.

You never know where your piano lessons could lead you. With your newfound creativity and skill, you may come up with an idea for a whole new business for yourself – whether it involves music or something else you can teach! And every little bit of extra income will help!

5. Your piano lessons are a way to relieve stress and to relax, and this is especially crucial during challenging times.

Stress can lead to all sorts of health problems – difficulty sleeping and fatigue, muscle and back pain, digestive problems and even serious illness and disease. You need all of your energy and strength to cope with the recession. Focus your practice time specifically on the types of music that you enjoy the most and that help you relax.

Yes, there is a recession and yes, that will affect what you choose to spend your money on. But before you quit your piano lessons, consider carefully exactly what you would be giving up.
