How to Read Music

Reading Music can be overwhelming at first. I put together a tutorial to give you an understanding of how music on the staff is related to the notes on the piano.

This first video will walk you through where to download the printout that you will be working with, and give you an overview of the first half of the printout.

Use this link to find your printout – hint: it’s under the bonus link:

Free Piano Lesson Page

This next video continues with the printout where the last one ends. The end of this video might be a little bit confusing, so I made a third video that takes you to the piano to clarify what is on the printout. So, don’t worry if the last part of video #2 is confusing because I will take you step by step in video #3.

And this video takes you to the piano and clarifies the last part of video #2:

I’m very hapy to learn the piano by this method, which is very clear. I used to be taught in my teenage year by a dumb old lady, which my dad thought was a good teacher. He kept paying this stupid lady, who wasn’t capable of teaching me the left hand notes on the staff, and so I kept mistaking the tunes, and I got frustrated and left the lessons.. She had her 90 year old mother that chose to walk off her home everytime I did lessons..

Hi Lisa, I must confess your way of teaching has been wonderful and effective, and my daughter and I are progressing gradually. Thanks for making it so simple. My question is just as in typing, do we have particular fingers assigned to particular notes? Thanks for your response.

Hey Lisa, I’m a 50 year old woman who has never touched a piano in her life. I just inherited a piano so I figured, what the heck? So I am on Lesson One, and I will keep you updated on my progress. Thanks so much for doing this for people. I am in a remote rural area and would never be able to get a piano teacher to come out here, or to even find a teacher anywhere close by to drive to. Bless you.

    Lisa
We have a Baby Grand that came with the house we just bought. No one knows how to play piano in our family. So I decided to take lessons from the ground up. I am 64 years old but determined like you say to bring joy of playing to myself and also to others if I get better. Your lessons are a welcome addition to my repetoire of learning and thanks for sharing your knowledge.

    Dave
