Spontaneous Moments on the Piano…

During my last visit to San Diego, my brother surprised me when he stopped by on his lunch break. He started to play around on the piano and I captured a little bit on camera.

I just wanted to take a moment to show you that playing piano isn’t just about playing a song perfectly, it is about enjoying time with friends and family. The piano has a rich history, and one that unites generations together. Since I am holding the camera, what you don’t get to see is us playing some fun duets together, but here’s a clip of some spontaneous conversation between brother and sister… Enjoy!

P.S. This piano, is the piano I started lessons on when I was 5 years old. (In 1969!) Am I that old?

Using Correct Fingering

Fingering is very flexible, and over time you will naturally learn the smoothest way to play a song. Most songs have fingering recommendations (I call them recommendations because it is flexible). While learning a song, you can stop and write in the fingering that you feel is comfortable, following some of the maneuvers I teach in the lessons. Just apply them where it feels right, and feels comfortable. It is easy to know when your fingering is not working.

Most of all, don’t let fingering intimidate you… enjoy playing the piano.. if it feels good and sounds good, then that’s what matters.

Tips for Making Piano Practice Easier

Relax, Breathe, Back-up. You are probably rushing yourself.
Now…practice the piano again…see, it works!

Learning piano takes time. Each day you will be a little better than the day before.
Yes, a few days you missed your practice,, BUT…Get back on track, in the groove, on schedule. Don’t fret. Your piano skills will show the progress!

Take action, get your inspiration. Be the best piano player today that you can be!

3. If you are not familiar with how the Instant Play Songs work, read through the print out so that you can follow along the video a little easier.

4. Most importantly… Have Fun! (And please leave your comments below and give my husband a little pat on the back for being a good sport! ~smile~)

The 5 Letter Word That Will Hurt Your Piano Lesson Progress

There’s something I hear from many students when they start to learn piano.  It’s a five letter word that will kill your progress dead in its tracks – want to know what it is..?

Later.

Later is the one single word that will make the difference between learning how to play the piano and not learning at all. Reading sheet music, and playing your favorite songs by  using  my step by step piano lesson method is achievable without any doubt, for pretty much anyone that does it consistently.

That’s why it’s so frustrating to hear students say, ‘I’ll practice later.’

There are 2 problems with using the “later” attitude.

#1: Life gets in the way – The time you thought you would set aside gets taken up with something else, so your practicing gets put back to ‘later’, and guess what – later never comes!

#2: The other problem with thinking that writing takes huge chunks of time, is that it’s just not true! Playing the piano is *not* like writing school essays, the process is *not* like homework! In fact the process can be compared to a telephone call with your friend, and a brief one at that! It is a relaxing and enjoyable experience each time you sit down and practice!

And all you need is 10 minutes per practice time.   Start today and renew your commitment with yourself and set aside 10 minutes to become the pianist you always dreamed to be!
